How Air Cooled Modular Water Chiller Work?



Air Cooled Chillers are very common, especially in small to medium size commercial and office type buildings. They are usually located externally, either up on the roof or at ground level. This is because Air Cooled Chillers do not use cooling towers, instead they dump their heat into the ambient air and therefore need access to a lot of fresh air, in order to reject the unwanted heat from the building.


The chillers will produce 'chilled water' which is pumped out around the building to the Air Handling Units (AHU) and Fan Coil Units (FCU) Which remove the unwanted heat from the building and transfer it into the chilled water loop. The chilled water will enter the AHUs/FCUs at around 7°C and by the time it leaves the heat exchanger within the AHU/FCU it will have risen to around 12°C and will then make its way back to the Air Cooled Water Chiller to dump this heat into the atmosphere before repeating the cycle.


The warm return 'chilled water' only enters the evaporator where it passes along the outside surface area of the inner tubes, which contain the refrigerant, it then exits at the opposite end having given up its thermal energy. The refrigerant is the only fluid which moves around each of the components of the chiller. It changes its pressure, temperature, enthalpy and entroy as it moves around the machine and transports the unwanted heat away from the evaporator chilled water.

Conventional Modular Type Air Cooled Chiller

Modular type chillers adopt V shape air side heat exchanger and single unit’s capacity from 66kW to 135kW.

The master module chiller can work independently or together with up to 16 slave modules. In one combination module chiller system, all slave units operate as alternative in cycle duty to keep equal running time. In a combination chiller system, if one module chiller failed, other modules can be back-up instead of the failed one for continuing operation.

Colors can be ordered in either white or grey.



Features

CASING/STRUCTURE The casing is made of zinc coated galvanised steel sheets. It is further treated with an electrostatic powder coat then over baked to provide a weather resistant finish to suit the harsh climate. The screws are also zinc plated to improved product durability.

COMPRESSOR High efficiency scroll type compressor is hermetically sealed, quiet running and supported on rubber mounts to minimise vibration. All compressors are provided with an internal overload protection, and incorporate crankcase heater for smooth start-up under any conditions.

CONDENSER The condenser coils are manufactured from seamless copper tubes mechanically bonded to blue hydrophilic aluminium fins to ensure optimum heat transfer. The shoulder of each fin adjoins the shoulder of the adjacent fin, completely encasing the copper tubes for maximum heat transfer. The generously sized coils provide ample capacity under all normal operating conditions. To improve corrosion resistance, a hydrophilic Gold Fin is provided as optional.

CONDENSER FAN External rotor type axial fans, equipped with direct drive motors, low noise, protection level IP54, provided with a protective outlet grille.

EVAPORATOR Evaporator built with high efficiency shell & tube type heat exchanger, factory insulated with flexible close cell material.
REFRIGERANT CIRCUIT Refrigerant circuit complete with charge valves, filter drier, gas-liquid separator, thermostatic expansion valve, high & low pressure switch. The Heat Pump unit is completed also with 4-way valve, liquid receiver and one way valve.

HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT Hydraulic circuit built with galvanized pipe, complete with water discharge connection for heat exchanger and flange type hydraulic connectors in two directions easy for connections from both sides of the units.

ELECTRICAL PROTECTION Electric panel consists of breakers and contactors for compressors & condenser fan motors, phase sequence protector, other necessary protection devices for the main components and microprocessor with function display. All electric parts are Schneider Electric/ABB brand.
